Impromptu Childs Pirate Outfit

This week the twins returned to school after the festive break.

Just a couple of hours into the day I received an email from the school reminding me it was pirate dress up day the following day.  It was nice to get the reminder, even more so because it was the first I'd heard of it!

We have one pirate outfit in the house & that belongs to the monkey, what was I going to do for little Moo?  What on earth does a girl pirate wear??  Oh I know... the same as a boy pirate only with a bit of bling :)

First up I need a white shirt with a bit of a ruffle.  A rummage around her wardrobe came up with a plain white t-shirt.  Now to add the ruffle.  Best I could find for this was a piece of lace (left over from some wedding ring cushions I made!).  Few pins & a bit of sewing & the shirt is complete.

Pirate Shirt - T-shirt & Lace
Next up, a jacket of some discription.  First of all I was trying to find a long t-shirt in either plain red or black.  Between the two of them, neither twin has either, can you believe it???  Time to re-think.  This time I raided the monkeys wardrobe & found a waistcoat.... bonus... that will do.

Waistcoat - straight out the boys wardrobe

Downstairs to raid the bag of Strictly fabrics (yes that would be all things chiffon & sequiney from Strictly Come Dancing!).  Found some perfect red fabric with a bit of bling.  The day was rapidly getting away from me here to it was time to work fast.  I cut out, very roughly I might add, some of the red to match the front panels of the waistcoat.

Rough cut panels for waistcoat front

Next up, I appliqued the red straight on to the front of the waistcoat.  I used red thread on top & black thread on the bobbin.  Again, this was done very quickly with not an awful lot of care going into turning & pinning the edges under (ooops!).

Waistcoat complete

With the waistcoat now complete it was just accessories to go.  I know for a fact that we have two pirate eye patches kicking about our house..... do you think I could find one of them??? nope... nothing.  Time to whip up a couple of eye patches.  Back to the strictly bag where I knew i'd seen a bit of black velvet.  This was just long enough to cut into strips & cut a little patch for the eyes.  Tiny bit of elastic on the back to join the two sides meant that I could be sure they wouldn't just slip straight off.  Of course the girl one had to match her waistcoat :)

Girl & Boy Pirate Eye Patches
Last up was some type of head gear.  Easy one, a piece of stretchy chiffon in bright red & cut into a large triangle would make a perfect bandana.

Triangle Pirate Headwear

Outfit complete & in time for dress up day too :)

What did I learn from this very quick outfit make?? Never work with children & sequins at the same time!!

Happy Christmas

I had lots to post about in the run up to Christmas but unfortunately the Flu virus struck our house & pretty much changed all of our plans.  After spending several days in bed & shipping the twins off to Grandmas over night I would say that I'm feeling about 85% now.  Not quite 100% but getting there.

I leave you with a photo of my completed fabric door wreath & wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

New Stash :)

This weekend it's my birthday & the celebrations started yesterday with my first gift.  A ticket to The Knitting & Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace from my good friend Franney of Franney Makes.  We met up at London Victoria station & traveled together to Ally Pally, both very excited to see what this years show has in store for us.

I had some birthday money sent to me in advance from my brother & sister-in-law.  They knew I was heading to the show so very kindly allowed me some pennies to shop with while I was there.

We had a fabulous time at the show, it's become an annual pilgrimage for us & we spend the year looking forward to it.  We also met up with two other lovely friends while we were there & catching up at the end of the day in the bar was a welcome rest.

Here's what I came back with this year.

Lisa G Creations - New Stash 2012

A Fire Dragon cross stitch chart
Cherry, whales & spots FQ's
Sew Stitchy charm pack
1 metre each of pussy cat fabric, pink with pretty birds & Disney Cars fabric
Spotty fabric in pink n cream & brown n cream

Not a bad haul of new goodies, came away with lots on a wish list & ideas galore of things to make.  Lets hope it's not too long before I can show you something made out of these lovelies.

Charming :)

Yesterday myself & friend Franney took a trip to a lovely little quilting shop called Puddleducks in Sevenoaks, Kent.  I think the phrase "small but perfectly formed" is the best way to describe the shop.  It's quite literally wall to wall fabrics, accessories & notions.

I went along with a little cash & was fully prepared to make a purchase.  It took me a while to take it all in as everywhere you looked there were more bolts & ranges of lovely fabrics that were shouting "buy me... buy me".  It wasn't until Franney started showing me the lovely Layer Cakes that I saw something I really liked the look of.  A Moda range called Sophie by Chez Moi.  I quickly sifted through the Charm Packs to see if there was one but alas, no charm pack.  After deciding not to purchase anything Franney asked if they had an Sophie charm packs & after crawling under the table the lady produced not one, not even two but a pack of 10 charm packs.  Franney grabbed one.... I grabbed another one.  I was thinking of getting a nice red to pair with it but then thought the red would be a little too bright/dark & totally detract from the lovely range so instead I plumped for a lovely summery marble yellow.

I look forward to making a quilt with these :)

For now though, it's on the top of my charm pack pile.... ooops! :)

Cross Stitch Update & Ooops.... more New Stuff :)

Here I give you the first update on my Lizzie*Kate cross stitch & in the words of Rolf Harris "Can you tell what it is yet???" LOL

Next, I recently visited a local quilt store that has relocated over the festive season to a nice new location. Larger premises, more fabric, better parking, what more could you ask for??

Well I had to go for some interfacing but unfortunately I thought I'd have a browse at the FQ's & I came across a lovely leaf pattern on cream & totally fell in love with it, so much so that I couldn't just buy the FQ but had to buy enough to use in a quilt & then (with the help of a friend), I just HAD to choose some further fabrics to go with it, thus giving me a new quilt project.... Ooops!

I also picked up a couple of FQ's with some yummy cupcakes on. These are for a project that I need to have a few dummy runs on first just to make sure I have all my measurements correct.

Oh yeah & some more FQ's, these are for a kiddy project that I also need to do some dummy runs on before cutting into these adorable fabrics.

4th Blogoversary Giveaways :)

The 25th May saw my 4th Blogoversary & to mark the event I'm offering a giveaway... well 2 giveaways actually. One for Cross Stitch & one for Quilting.

Before I post you a picture of the giveaways I have just a few requests for your entry.

  • Please state on your comment if your entry is for Cross Stitch or Quilting.
  • Please leave a seperate comment if you wish to enter for both.
  • For an extra entry into the giveaway please post a link to this page onto twitter using the hashtag #giveaway & include me in the tweet @LisaGCreates. Thank you & much appreciated :)
Now for the fun bit... the giveaway items.

First up is the cross stitch bundle. All items are from Polstitches Designs. It includes 3 pieces of dyed aida, all measuring 9 x 12 inches & 3 packs of limited edition hand dyed threads. The limited editions are called "Santa Says It With Thread", "Lets Talk Colour" & a pack which includes a Polstitches Designs cross stitch chart called Oriental Lady but appears to have no name. All packs have 7 hand dyed varigated threads in them.

Next up, the quilting giveaway. This is 8 fat quarters, cut fresh off the bolt. They're from the Notting Hill range by Fabric Freedom. I love this range & I'm looking forward to making a quilt from it myself but I'd love to see what the winner of this FQ bundle makes with theirs.

The giveaways will close at 12 noon BST on Sunday 12th June & I'll announce winners on Sunday evening. That gives you just under 2 weeks to get your entry's in & to spread the word to all your crafty friends.

Happy stitching & happy winning :)
